Jamie Tanner: A real good roasting

Jamie Tanner, Head Roaster at Hot Numbers Roastery, shared his coffee journey with us and it all started when he was just 18 years old, working at a local coffee franchise. He admits to not even liking coffee for the first 4 years of his barista career! However, in hindsight, he puts that down to the poor quality of the coffee he had tried back then.

He then moved on to a different role, with a more premium coffee brand, focussing more on the training and sales side of the process. It was with this particular brand that Jamie had his eyes opened to a standard of coffee that he
could finally get on board with and a true love for coffee finally commenced!

Jamie came to Hot Numbers initially to work on the wholesale side of the business. Once he was settled in though, he was drawn to the coffee roasting and expressed an interest to founder Simon. Not one to pass up on a sign of passion from a staff member, Simon sent Jamie on the required training and he soon found his place within the Roastery.

Today, Jamie combines his love and knowledge for coffee with science and maths, to be the master of his craft. The role of Head Roaster requires an acute attention to detail and an understanding of the nuances and quirks of each
different variety of coffee bean – Jamie posesses these skills in abundance and uses them to roast around 4-500kg of beans per day, twice per week. In 2023, Hot Numbers produced just shy of 40 tonnes of perfectly roasted coffee beans.

Average quantity of coffee consumed in a day: Just 1-2 cups is enough!
Favourite coffee origin: Colombia

“There has been huge investment in Colombian coffee and the new processes over there are producing some really interesting flavours
